تم إلغاء مظاهر الزينة بأعياد الميلاد، والتجمعات الحاشدة في منتصف الليل وكل مظاهر سانتا كلوس في العراق بقرار من القادة المسيحيين تم اتخاذه على ضوء تهديدات جديدة أصدرها تنظيم القاعدة، الذي تعهد بـ “تعقب ورصد” المسيحيين.
Christmas decorations, midnight masses, and appearances by Santa Claus have been cancelled in Iraq after Christian leaders called off Christmas celebrations in light of new threats made by Al Qaeda, who had vowed to “hunt down” Christians.

Iraqi Christians have been either fleeing from Baghdad and Mosul to the Kurdish capital in northern Iraq, or emigrating from the country following a series of bombings and assassinations targeting Christians, the first of which resulted in the death of around 68 church-goers, including two priests – an attack Al Qaeda had taken responsibility for.

نشرت واشنطن بوست أنه ولسوء الحظ فإن إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي أوباما والتي أكدت لنا مؤخراً أن قضية حقوق الإنسان هي مسألة أولوية، فقدت طريقها وتاهت في خضم الحوار حول قضية الحرية الدينية. حيث أنها تمثل موضوعاً لم يلتفت له أحد، حيث لقيت باقي الأولويات – والتي منا الاشتباك مع النظام الإيراني، الاشتباك مع سوريا، الاشتباك مع الصين، وإعادة إنشاء العلاقات مع روسيا – مركز الصدارة والاهتمام. وللأسف، عندما غامر أوباما برحلته إلى القاهرة في بداية فترة توليه الحكم، امتنع عن التحدث بصراحةٍ أمام جمهوره من المسلمين. فبالنسبة لأوباما، يتمثل خطاب المسلمين وتوعيتهم في ما يرغب طغاة الشرق الأوسط في سماعه فقط. وحيث أن هذا يمثل فشلاً زريعاً، فلربما حان الوقت لوقوع شيءٍ ما جديد – سياسة خارجية مثلاً تقوم على كلٍ من السلطة الأمريكية وقيمها. إلا أنني افترض أنه بالنسبة لإدارةٍ يسيطر عليها هاجس ألا تمثل “إدارة بوش”، فإن ذلك الأمر يُعَدُ مهمةً شاقةً لتنفيذها.
اوباما هي جادة في حقوق الانسان?
From the Washington Post: Unfortunately, the Obama administration, which has recently assured us that human rights really is a priority, has been missing in action on the topic of religious freedom. It is a subject that has fallen by the wayside as other priorities — engagement with the Iranian regime, engagement with Syria, engagement with China, and reset with Russia — have taken center stage. And alas, when Obama ventured to Cairo early in his term, he declined to speak candidly to his Muslim audience. For Obama, Muslim outreach has too often amounted to telling Middle East despots what they want to hear. Since this has generally been a failure, perhaps it is time for something new — a foreign policy that projects both American power and our values. But, I suppose, for an administration obsessed with being “not Bush,” that’s a tall order.

Ah, but you see, they have better things to worry about than these Iraqi Christians because, at the end of the day, they’re still A-rabs.
