Government Help Little or Nothing to Sumatra’s Quake

Posted on October 4, 2009

The problem with Padang, Sumatra earthquake is the lack of heavy equipments and easy access to the affected area and above all the slowliness of Government action as reported by NYT:

Emergency workers continued to struggle Sunday to reach several remote villages buried beneath landslides caused by a large earthquake, while a steady stream of bodies, wrapped in yellow bags, arrived by ambulance at the city’s main hospital.

More than 700 people were confirmed dead throughout the island of Sumatra, and thousands remained missing four days after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit the western coast. Heavy rains at night hampered rescue efforts.

… with little or sometimes no help coming from the authorities, some affected neighborhoods turned to an informal network of businesses and volunteers to fill the void.

For remote area disaster maybe they couldnt do much due to the problem access. Many road had been severely damaged. However our government is doing their best effort until now. The NYT reporter should watch indonesian tv a lot before he wrote such a stupid thing.

The boring old song…Indonesian government (and people) never shows considerable improvement on crisis management. How many more disasters can bring us to a better understanding of crisis management? With so many earthquakes and disasters, Indonesia should’ve been an expert nation in dealing with disasters by now…We don’t even have 911. Our sense of disaster is soo low..
