There are some surreal and paradox things about Indian Muslims. first, they are look very conservative and stick to traditional hanafi school of thought which means they are very hard to go along with modernity. indian muslim women are not allowed to do namaz (prayer) in the mosque whereas in other countries like indonesia, malaysia and others with non-hanafi school of thought preferences.
they also strictly keep beard a bit longer than their arab counterparts. according to hanafis point of view, keeping beard is almost obligatory (not obligatory).
yet, there are some cases where indian muslims tradition entirely un-Islamic. for example, in terms of marriage. it’s very clear and known that in islamic teaching practiced and said by the Prophet Muhammad dowry (mahr) are just symbolically necessary. a groom can give even just an iron ring to his bride.
it’s not the case of indian muslims. they’re precisely duplicating what their hindu counterpart in marriage: the bride (not the groom/male) has to give a very expensive dowry to her bride.
second, islam condemns casteism and racism based on color of skin, social status or whatever. that is why islam gains so many followers along history. again, indian muslims like their hindu counterpart emulating the hindu system of casteism.
so weird and paradox. on one way, they want to practice islamic teaching as strict as possible and precisely like in the era of the Prophet Muhammad (at least they say so). unfortunately, what they’ve done just emulating a non-essential practice of the Prophet: keeping beards, wearing traditional clothes, etc. at the same time, mimicking the hindus in much more important and substantial ways: in marriages and casteism which are strongly forbidden in islam.
that kinda contradictory also reflect the level of education of indian muslims and their ulama. and that’s one of the reason why indian muslims are living in poverty and backwardness.
