Indonesia Educational System should create Entrepreneurs, Not Job Seekers

October 29, 2009 by Blogger Indonesia

“Students should be encouraged to create jobs instead of looking for ones” says Presiden Sby. Couldn’t agree more with President SBY on this. Don’t forget, however, that encouragement should not  come only from the educational system, it also should come from the parents of the students. Thus, educating the parents is no less importants too.

How many young talented Indonesian who have wasted their entrepreneurship talent only to be a PNS (pegawai negeri sipil or public servants) because of their parents ‘indoctrination’?

Vivanews has more

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on National Education Minister to revise the Indonesian educational system starting from kindergarten to senior high school.

“A proper way should be designed to avoid the students from aiming only at final marks,” he said on Thursday, Oct 29, in Jakarta.

According to Mr Yudhoyono, the old methodology will not improve the zest and innovative thinking of the students during 12 years of their study. “Should the method is improvised, we could in the future encourage them to create jobs instead of looking only for one,” he said.

Somehow I get offended by the title, hitting right on the bull’s eye. Seeking a job desperately is what I’m doing now. Simply because I have nothing in mind about what to do after graduation. I know it sounds like the lamest excuse ever but that’s what is happening to millions of unemployed young men out there. And after all, being an entrepreneur takes talent to some extent and ultimate perseverence.Only few men have the requirements.
I guess it sounds better if we can be an entrepreneur and an employee at the same time. We can double our income, can’t we? Being an entrepreneur boosts our creativity and working as an employee can be beneficial as we get paid regularly. Why must we choose one of them if we can have both??

One more! speaking of parents indoctrination, well…I have to say you made a good point there. I proudly declare I’m one of the indoctrination victims. FYI, both of my parents are confirmed government civil servants. Why did I say ‘confirmed’? Because the way they think shows how much they worship the status of being government civil servant; the financial security we’ve got after being retired no matter how depressing economy can go, and above all, the status the society gives to government civil servant. Even my dad argued, people certainly respect a government civil servant paid 1 million more than a businessman/entrepreneur making 10 million each month. I used to think being a govt civil servant was my last option, but now as the economy goes down, I changed my mind.. a bit. It hurts to betray my own belief but I must base my life upon the ground of reality.

Fatih, I agree with you regarding this matter. I have the privilege to study abroad in US, and you can clearly see here that entrepreneurship is flourished. It is true like what Akhlis said that not everybody can be an entrepreneur, it needs talent and perseverance. However, just like what Thomas Edison said, success is 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration, so with enough hard work, everybody can be an entrepreneur.

#yes. basically everybody in indonesia could be an entrepreneur. the problem is the mindset of their parents. most young indonesian think that being an entrepreneur or opening a start-up is not a sign of success to attract the heart and mind of girls they love or the would-be parents-in-law; being a PNS is. wearing a safari with some badges here and there are much more attractive especially to parents and to parents-in-law. only determined young indonesians can go against that trend

Wait..hang on a sec, determined young Indonesians? Define ‘determined’, please.
I suppose it’d be better for us to ‘reinstall’ or brainwash our parents’ archaic way of thinking. And I’d rather think moderately about this. Govt civil servant is just as noble as entrepreneur.
Here..look, mas Fatih, you know how hard it is to curb corruption in this country and in most of the cases, corruption occurs in public official level. Public officials, if my memory serves right, are govt civil servants. By recruiting young fresh minds with supposedly more corruption-free attitude, chances to win over corruptors and beat corruption are naturally higher. we need intelligent and morally-flawless young people to reform the whole already-deteriorating system..There I said it.
I’m not trying to offend entrepreneurs but really, entrepreneurs have less chance to wipe out this systemic corruption just because they’re out of the authority circle.
Point is..being a govt civil servant isn’t that bad, actually

#there should be good, idealistic and determined people inside the government. the facts of the matter in this country, there are too many young people who want to be PNS. PNS has become the first choice for most of young indonesian. and that should be a matter of concern.
