Malaysia Claims Jemur Island
Bali’s Pendet dance row has not dissipated yet, Malaysia has allegedly claimed pulau Jemur (Jemur island) as its own. Viva News reports:
Amid the unsettled dispute over the inclusion of Pendet dance show on ‘Enigmatic Malaysia’ ad and the Malaysian national anthem ‘Negaraku’ which is allegedly copied from the ‘Terang Bulan’ song, a new problem emerged.
Within the past few days, Riau local media reported about a tourism website which claims Jemur Island as Malaysia’s tourist destination.
On Travel Journal and Osvaja.net, Jemur Island is deemed a tourism destination of Selanggor, Malaysia. The website also declares 2° 52′ 10 North Latitude and 100° 34′ 0 East Longitude as the location of the island.
If you don’t have a clue where Pulau Jemur is, this is what Wikipedia has to say:
Pulau Jemur is an island of Indonesia which is located in the Strait of Malacca, about 45 miles from capital of Rokan Hilir regency, Bagansiapiapi, and about 45 miles from Malaysia. Actually, Pulau Jemur is named for several of small island, the isles are Pulau Tekong Emas, Pulau Tekong Simbang, Pulau Labuhan Bilik and some others small isles.
Pulau Jemur has a good natural sea view and beautiful panorama, and serves as home for sea turtles. It has a strategic location on the Strait of Malacca; during the Second World War, the Japanese built a defence on this island.
Many places can be found there, such as Japanese Cave, Light House tower, and others.
Pulau Jemur has a natural golden beach sand. Local government are trying to develop it as a resort area.
Jemur islands are uninhabited and only a stopover place for fishermen who are to sea. A post of TNI-AL was established in this island for the purposes of observation and navigation.
Meanwhile, world-geographics.com states Jemur Island as a part of Indonesia’s territory.
Saykoji, Indonesian rapper, has this special song dedicated for Malaysian people. Watch the video:

Seems like it’s the beginning of Ganyang Malaysia part2. I suspect some other 3rd parties are trying to benefit from these strives. But no matter what happens, peaceful and civilized diplomacy must be the first alternative to settle this. We’re not going to be the 2nd Vietnam or Korea
I didn’t realize the magnitude of the conflict until a couple of minutes ago I read news on the Jakarta Post, reporting Undip rector decided to reject any Malaysian’s applications wanting to go there. I don’t know what to say and how to react to this news, the conflict puts the whole nation in such a difficult position, what kind of stance we should have as a nationalist and an academician. I read some foreigners (some of them are Malaysians) indicated how shallow Undip rector way of thinking has been. On one hand, it hurts me as an Indonesian and an Undip alumni..But on the other hand, I know being an intellectual or scientist or academician means we have to set aside our biased perspective, unfair stereotype, prejudice, subjectiveness, and in this case our “patriotism”. I even don’t know how to define “nationalism” and ‘patriotism” well.
what should I do?
What amazed me is a comment from a Dutch citizen named Helena van der Winden saying:
“I’m sick and bored with the arguments over pendet, wayang, rendang, tacky songs, etc. Do most Indonesians know that we (the Dutch) who drew the territorial boundaries? Indonesians & Malaysians were part of Nusantara. You should start dealing with this kind of issue with a different perspective. The way you handle this issue show how uneducated and obnoxious you are. The media is also responsible for this madness. I appreciate the effort of some young Malaysians and Indonesians who promote discussion through Indonesia-Malaysia Damai on facebook. This kind of group is more healthy, compared to following some stupid politicians who demand “ganyang” Malaysia.”
So,mas fatih..will you please stop posting news/article that may aggravate the already chaotic situation? You know lots of people, including Malaysians, visit and read articles on this weblog.I guess it’s better to post something that may lead this dispute to a solution that satisfies both nations…It’s Romadhon now and Alloh forbids us to wage WARS, including wars of swear and provoking words in the internet.
I’m deeply concerned about this nation’s maturity in dealing with such sensitive problems. Show to the wolrd, this nation is civilized, cultured, prudent and well-behaved.
I rest my case….fiuh
Ayo kita jadikan ini sebagai bahan introspeksi diri
Jemur Island is absolutely owned by Riau, but Malaysia promote that beatiful island as their torism destination..
Dear Hendrawan,
I am a Malaysian. There are 2 islands in Strait of malacca by the name of Jemur island.
One Jemur island is situated not far from Selangor. Malaysia has sovereignty over the island.
Another island, also Jemur Island is off Sumatera coast. Indonesia has sovereignty on that island.
Moral of the story is to verify any story that you unheard . Verify the facts or a person will make a fool of himself.

Sun Tzu said to win a war you must know well who your enemy is, and most importantly…know who you are, your weaknesses and virtues..because sometimes the biggest enemy lies within ourselves. So Indonesia, have you known who you are?
Never ending claiming
