mWomen, an initiative broached by Cherie Blair and Hillary Clinton, aims to provide 150 million women in developing countries globally with access to mobile phone technology.

A study conducted by the GSM Association found that a sub-Saharan African woman is 23% less likely to own a mobile phone than a man is, a Middle Eastern women 24% less likely, and a South Asian woman 37% less likely, making the total figure 300 million fewer women than men owners of mobile phones.

mWomen intends to reduce this number by half within three years, while working educational campaigns targeted at both men and women.

From PR Newswire: “Mobile phones are an indispensible personal, economic and development tool, but 300 million women are missing out on the mobile revolution. Helping more women access mobile technology means they can feel safer, improve their literacy, access vital health information and generate a better income. I am thrilled to be an mWomen champion. I know this programme will succeed because it has support from all sectors. It is only by working together in partnership that we can achieve results,” said Mrs. Blair.

From Hillary Clinton’s speech at the launching of mWomen: So we’re called to close the mobile gender gap because of our commitment to fairness and because of our commitment to progress. I’ve said it so many times that some of you, I’m sure, are able to recite it by heart, but investing in women is an investment in families, communities, and countries. Investing in women’s progress is the most direct and effective way to invest in progress economically and socially globally.
