New Google Book Pact
the Justice Department remains concerned that the fact the settlement gives Google immunity from lawsuits related to orphan works may be anticompetitiv. via WSJ
Google Inc. and two author and publisher groups submitted a modified version of a controversial settlement over digital books, but it appears likely the fight over the agreement will continue.
The revised pact submitted late Friday would allow Google to distribute millions of digital books online, but would cut the number of works covered by the settlement by at least half by removing millions of foreign works.
Yet the issue of whether it is fair for the settlement to let Google distribute books whose legal rights owners haven’t been identified—known as orphan works—is still drawing criticism.

Aku termasuk kutu buku, jadi jk google mau menyebr buku akan dasir terima dengan tangan terbuka. Salam
horee…mudah – mudahan banyak buku yang menarik dan bermanfaat
On one hand, I’m so glad to know that Google has managed to provide more and easier access to one of the most precious human civilization products, i.e. books. Even with a slow internet connection, people in developing countries where bookstores are scarce and libraries aren’t as complete as they wish will be able to read any books they need and want, and definitely benefit most out of this. Illiteracy will perish faster and there’ll be more educated people in the years to come.
On the other hand, there is a deep concern about intellectual copyrights which arises as the logical consequence of the settlement.
But as a reader, I guess those orphan works’ legal owners will voluntarily let Google publish them.I cross my fingers for that ^_^
