No Smoking Day
It’s no smoking day today (Saturday) May 31:
The theme of this year’s World No Smoking Day is ‘Smoking-Free Youth’. Health organisations will again put their heads together to ensure complete enforcement of the Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smoker Ordinance 2002. .. Smoking kills 4.9 million people worldwide every year and tobacco will be the biggest cause of premature deaths by 2030 – about 10 million every year.
I am happy that I have the luxury to be able to quit smoking. To be part of those who celebrate it. Really am.
No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness day in the United Kingdom that is intended to help smokers who want to quit smoking. The first No Smoking Day was on Ash Wednesday in 1984 and now takes place on the second Wednesday in March.
The campaign is in its 25th year. The theme of the 2008 campaign was The Great No Smoking Day Challenge, which encouraged smokers to try quitting for a week, whilst gaining sponsorship to support their quit attempt. Participants were then encouraged to build on their success by seeking support to stay smoke free.
Smokers were also encouraged to sign up for free email and text message support, and free ‘quit packs’ were also provided.
In Indonesia
With a lack of tobacco control and regulation at the national level, Indonesia has been targeted by many national and transnational tobacco companies. The prevalence of youth smokers in Indonesia in 2005 was 38% among boys and 5.3% among girls. The aim of this study was to describe and analyse beliefs, norms and values about smoking among teenage boys in a rural setting in Java, Indonesia. Six focus group discussions with boys aged 13-17 years were conducted using a thematic discussion guide. Four themes were derived from the descriptive content analysis: (i) smoking as a culturally internalized habit, (ii) striving to become a man, (iii) the way we smoke is not dangerous and (iv) the struggle against dependency.[....]

Some things become big issues while other things that should have, don’t. In Netherlands, smoking has been forbidden since a few days ago. Other countries may follow. People put smoking as a problem to be solved since it has caused many deaths. But is it so tragic? Tobacco has contributed our country a large income for decades, which is a fact, that many of our youths can enjoy a lot of privileges from it. “Privileges” that i mean here is that the developments in many sectors, such as sports, education, health, employment, entertainment, and many others that depend on this income. I think it’s not tragic, but it’s ironic. People assume that tobacco has caused a lot of deaths; however, ask ourselves about the effects of other causes of deaths. War, cholesterol, stresses, high-radiation food, water contamination, accidents, disasters, and many others. Have we taken these under consideration instead of their less benefits? War is unavoidable, but we can minimize the collateral damage. Cholesterol is unavoidable, but we can minimize the consumption. High-radiation food is unavoidable, but we can grow more fruits in our gardens. Face facts that annihilation doesn’t really work because some things linger and survive even longer than we could ever imagine. Since we are a species that has potentials to survive with the gift endowed upon us. What i am saying is that don’t get too obsessed by this condition for betterment. Since we are not alone.
