President SBY Bows to Public Pressure to Set Up Independent Commission

Posted on November 2, 2009

President SBY finally has to budge to public pressure. Giving up his ego, he invited four prominent figures for consultation. Previously, he stubbornly insist to support come-what-may whatever the Police decides.

Amid growing public outrage against the National Police for the arrest of Corruption Eradication Commission chairmen Chandra M Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Sunday night summoned four respected experts to hear their opinions about how to proceed.

One of the issues raised was the establishment of an independent team to investigate the police’s decision to arrest and detain Chandra and Bibit.

The president, who has maintained his trust in the National Police, had previously stated he would not interfere in what many believe is an attempt by authorities to muzzle the antigraft commission, also known as the KPK.

Consulted in the discussions were Komaruddin Hidayat, the rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta; Teten Masduki, secretary general of Transparency International Indonesia; Anis Baswedan, director of Paramadina University; and Hikmahanto Juwana, a law professor at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta.

Suppose this is a soccer match, giving the ball to the Police corpse can be contraproductive to his 2nd reign. What he previously did would pose him to risk of losing his legitimacy, and he isn’t foolish enough to jeopardize his newly-formed government.
