Serena Williams loses cool, and the game, in mad ending to U.S. Open women’s semifinal against Kim Clijsters
Defending U.S. Open champion Serena Williams smashed her racket after losing the first set, hurled an expletive-laced tirade at a line judge for calling a foot fault on match point, was docked that point for a second code violation, and, as a result, lost Saturday’s semifinal to Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5.
She walked across the net to Clijsters, who looked as bewildered as the Arthur Ashe Stadium audience, shook her hand and walked off the court. The crowd booed loudly as Williams waved.
Serving down 5-6 in the second set and trailing 15-30, Williams faulted on her first serve. A line judge called a foot fault on her second serve, making it a double fault and giving Clijsters match point. Furious with the call, Williams angrily went over and thrusted a tennis ball toward the line judge, screaming at her.
What’s Williams words to the line judge that led her to be disqualified? Here you go:
“I swear to God, I’ll f *** take this ball and shove it down your f *** throat.
Not only that, she’s also threatening the umpire with her racket (see the video below).
