Shoe attack mars Bush’s Iraq visit

Posted on December 14, 2008

CNN reports that a man identified as an Iraqi journalist threw shoes at — but missed — President Bush during a news conference Sunday evening in Baghdad, where Bush was making a farewell visit.

The shoe-thrower — identified as Muntadhar al-Zaidi, an Iraqi journalist with Egypt-based al-Baghdadia television network — could be heard yelling in Arabic: “This is a farewell … you dog!”

According to Al Jazeera:

An Iraqi reporter called Bush “a dog” and shouted out “this is the end” at Sunday’s news conference in Baghdad, before throwing his shoes at the US leader.

Bush, who had been giving a joint press statement with Nuri Al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, ducked behind a podium as the shoes narrowly missed his head.

He was reported to be unhurt after the attack by Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadiya television, the Associated Press news agency reported.

The outgoing US leader had just told reporters that while the war in Iraq was not over “it is decisively on its way to being won,” when al-Zeidi got to his feet and hurled abuse – and his footwear – at the US president.

Sign of contempt

In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt.

The incident will serve as a vivid reminder of the widespread opposition to the US-led invasion of, and subsequent war in, Iraq – the conflict which has come to define Bush’s presidency.

Duh nggak beradab banget itu wartawan. Mulai sekarang seharusnya ruang konferensi dijaga ketat. Harus dibuat papan peratura besar-besar: “Jurnalis dilarang membawa sepatu ke ruang konferensi”. Ini jelas memalukan kaum jurnalis, juga yang paling malu adalah pemerintah Iraq sendiri

If only that’s a contempt, Mr. Bush will kick him directly by him self, but Bush knew well that the journalist anger is the representation of Iraqi people’s anger.

Aku salut banget dech sama wartawan itu …. sayang aja kenapa cuma pake sepatu ngelemparnya, ga’ sekalian lemparin granat aja… biar “go to hell” tuch sekalian si bush ..

Though I was never supportive of the U.S. going into Iraq, as I felt terrorist were not located there, I do see the value in removing a dictator that carried out genocide. Beyond that, I believe we should have left the country.

As to the specific incident of the reporter throwing his shoes at President Bush. I see this as just one more confirmation of the illogical and dim-witted individuals our U.S. troops are trying to help. These low-life individuals resort to bombs, assination, and shoe throwing because they cannot form a cogent argument to represent their views. They are not worthy of the efforts of our troops. I believe the Iraqi people will get just what they deserve when our troops are withdrawn…internal fighting and killing between greedy factions thinly disguised as religious work. Allah must be ashamed of such behavior.

The shoe thowing is just what I would expect from a group of people that shoot live ammunition into the air to celebrate. What kind of idiot does that?

I think a good education and some development of verbal and written skills would be helpful…rather than mob mentality, which seems to be standard fair in Iraq.

Our troops are are being killed or worst being terribly wounded. Time to leave and let them fend for themselves. Maybe they would do better under Iran.

Good throw and a good duck. Was Bush ever in a three stooges movie? I think a pie would have been more to my taste, but then, there are those cultural differences, and a couple of pies might have been harder to get into the event than a pair of shoes on a pair of feet. I too, will be glad to see Bush go.

Portuguese say that Bush=bin laden=children killers=his own people killers, wen faced by litle man they once again act like Cowards, is it possible that a guy like this larry ho posted here, could think that someone is helping anyone by trowing bombs in children.
Is this larry a coward or what??!
Wy didn´t he stick his army in Ruanda? at the time of the genocide?? does this larry´s guys growns on trees, dindn,t the american put sadam in power in irak. This journalist in fact an hero! said more with his shoes than bush with his snake mouth. The super power killer loses agaist a small ant.
And proves that to win a fight, theres no need to kill inocentes, so Bush = smelly feet=coward=mamas boy=dog shit in a shoe= enemy of all mankind.
Thankfully the american people are trowing him out, but there should be an court to judje him after he gets out the wite house.
GO! Muntader! GO!

i agree with Wartawan and Larry in some ways.

For most people especially in Iraq Bush had brought disaster and nothing but agony – and i can completely understand if they have this personal hatred towards mr.Bush. *honestly, i LOL when i first saw the news. salute to him who’s dare enough to do such thing; especially in a secured conference room with his identity disclosed … and to Bush for his good reflex at such age.*

Later knowing what shoe throwing actually means, i disagree with his action. IMHO~ Bush is still a human being, having the same rights as anyone has. I don’t think it is for us *mortals of the same godly level* to judge whether he still deserve his human rights.
I believe there are better and smarter ways to judge his misbehavior other than this. :p

I’m not a Bush supporter, surely am against wars including the US invasion in Iraq, and am definitely not paid to write this.

=)

An Oxfam report from February 2008 put into startling focus what the U.S. invasion has really meant for Iraqis:
– More than four million Iraqis forced to flee either to another part of Iraq
or abroad.
– Four million Iraqis regularly cannot buy enough food.
– 70 percent are without adequate water supplies, compared to 50 percent in 2003.
– 28 percent of children are malnourished, compared to 19 percent before the 2003 invasion.
– 92 percent of Iraqi children suffer learning problems, mostly due to the climate of fear.
The Brookings Institute’s Iraq index also notes that the national unemployment rate is somewhere between 25 and 40 percent. Fifty-six percent of Iraqis say things in Iraq are going “quite bad” or “very bad.” Sixty percent rate economic conditions as “poor” and 75 percent rate security conditions “poor.”

Class act Fiza Zia ul Hannan, your way with words is only equaled with your intelligent grasp of world affairs.

Interestingly, its amusing to think what would happen to someone if they threw a shoe at SBY or for that matter Saddam. Of course, that take sthe fun out out of always blaming the US for everything worng in the world doesn;t it
