Smoking Ban Law in Surabaya Indonesia

Indonesia, arguably the largest child smokers in the world, starts taking serious step to ban the smokers to smoke in public places. It starts in Surabaya, East Java. Anyone who violates the law will be fined upto Rp. 50 million (roughly USD 5,000) or 6 months jail term. Wants to quit smoking?

    we don’t know implementation on field,
    as well as in Jakarta.

    It won’t be effective. The fine is too high for the average Indonesian, so people will prefer bribe than going to court. More corruption will be the norm then.

    Would it be better if the fine is not that high, but high enough to hurt their pocket not their life? Say 65.000 Rp. It is not high enough that people willing to bribe for that but high enough to hurt their pocket so they won’t caught smoking in public again.

  6. I think the problem is the enactment of the law. I no consistency, this policy will be ineffective.
