Lesson learnt, now early counseling for NTU students:
After the death of David Hartanto Widjaja, an Indonesian student, the campus in Singapore is trying to respond to students with problems earlier. In order to prevent more violence and suicide cases like David’s, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, where David used to study, began to reactivate its counseling services for students with mental or emotional problems. The counseling center will work together with the students’ health center and international student center. Professionals will be consigned at the counseling center.
Parents of David Hartanto Widjaja (pron. Wijaya) have identified his body:
The parents of an NTU undergraduate, who fell to his death after stabbing his professor in the university campus, has identified his body at the Singapore General Hospital mortuary.
They flew in from Jakarta on Monday evening after the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) authorities notified them of the tragedy, which stunned students returning to the campus on the first day after a one-week break.
David Widjaja’s parents and his elder brother were accompanied by NTU counsellors and officials from the Indonesian Embassy here.
Why the stabbing happens:
THE Nanyang Technological University student who stabbed his professor and then fell to his death was apparently upset over the termination of his Asean scholarship, said an Indonesian Embassy official here.
Mr Djatmiko of the Embassy’s Counsellor Protocol Office told Indonesia’s detikNews on Monday: ‘The motive of the stabbing apparently has to do with the termination of his scholarship, and there seemed to be a miscommunication over this.’
