Google Android is now well ahead of Apple’s iOS for iPhone in the race for market share in mobile operating systems, new data released Thursday showed.

Android’s total U.S. share for June came in at 39%, compared to 28% for Apple, according to data compiled by market watcher Nielsen. RIM’s BlackBerry OS was in third place with 20% of the market. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s fledgling Windows Phone 7 operating system, along with the remnants of the Windows Mobile OS, picked up 9% of the total market.

Firefox 4 brought a lot of new features, such as ability to sync bookmarks across different computers and improved tab navigation. It improved the speed of the browser. But it also brought random crashes. It is one of the major complaints with the Firefox 4.

According to WHOIS searches Wednesday, Apple is now listed as the owner of the iCloud.com domain. As late as Tuesday, the domain was still registered to Swedish firm Xcerion, which had used the URL for its online file-storage service.

Reports that surfaced in late April said Apple paid Xcerion $4.5 million for the iCloud.com domain. Several weeks before those reports, Xcerion had changed the name of that service to CloudMe and registered a new domain, cloudme.com, to support it.

Intel unveiled a new category of laptops that it says will include the best features of tablets as the world’s top chipmaker struggles to find its footing in the exploding market for mobile gadgets.

Netbook pioneer Asustek showed its first new PC in Intel’s “Ultrabook” class, the UX series, on Monday at the Computex computer show in Taipei. Intel said models made by other manufacturers would go on sale by Christmas and cost under $1,000.

The first electric-powered Rolls-Royce car will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1, the luxury vehicle maker announced on Sunday.

The one-off Phantom 102EX, to be fully electric-powered, will then go on a global tour taking in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America, according to the Goodwood, England-based company.
