انتقد الفاتيكان منح جائزة نوبل في الطب للطبيب البريطاني روبرت إدواردز الذي يعرفه العالم باسم “أبو الأطفال الأنابيب”. جاء في البيان الصادر عن الفاتيكان أول أمس أن منح إدواردز الجائزة يعد أمراً غير لائق بسبب أن عمله قد أوجد سوقا للبويضات البشرية، وخلق مشكلات بتجميد الأجنة.
The Vatican has criticized the Nobel Prize in Medicine being awarded to British doctor Robert Edwards, who is famous around the world for being the father of in vitro fertilization. In a statement issued two days ago, the Vatican declared that awarding Edwards is inappropriate, as his work has created a market for human ovules and frozen embryos.
Vatikan mengeritik Hadiah Nobel di bidang Kedokteran yang dihadiahkan pada dokter asal Inggris Robert Edwards, yang yang terkenal di dunia karena menjadi bapak in vitro fertilization (IVF) atau fertilisasi in vitro. Dalam sebuah pernyataan yang dikeluarkan dua hari lalu, Vatikan menyatakan bahwa penganugerahan Edwards tidaklah tepat karena hasil kerjanya telah menciptakan pasar untuk ovula manusia dan embrio beku.
وأضاف البيان أن أبحاث إدواردز تفتح مجالاً للتشكيك بشأن أخلاقيات الطب الحيوي وتثير الكثير من التساؤلات فيما يخص قضايا تأجير الرحم وظاهرة الأمهات المسنات.
The statement added that Edwards’ research casts a shadow of doubt on biomedical ethics, raising many questions regarding the issues of renting uterus and the phenomenon of older mothers.

The Vatican acknowledged external fertilization assistance in 2008, but considers in vitro fertilization as unethical because it sacrifices the lives of too many embryos.

On one hand I think it could be a blessing for couples that really want children but are unable, but on the other hand, if there are cases where embryos are created and destroyed I don’t know if I like that.”

This genius, in his 80s, had the ability to dream, and he made sure to achieve this dream with his colleague, the gynecologist, Stepto. Most importantly, he knew how to put medicine at the service of people’s happiness. He understood science as a tool for loving people and respecting their simple wishes, starting with the right to give birth to their children and obtain a piece of immortality through their children. He did not wait for the approval of religious leaders. He did not halt his research till they’ve figured out their differences. He was moved by the look of deprivation on the face of a deprived mother and a frustrated father. And as soon as this dream came true with the birth of Louise Brown, on July 25, 1978, the 1st child conceived through in vitro fertilization, he was attacked by the church, followed by all Salafis and religious leaders from around the world. They shouted “heretic, infidel, manipulator of the divine creation,” even though his technology allowed for the birth of 4 million children who brought joy with them to families that were slumbering in frustration. But still they kept using that weapon against him.
