أعرب فندق إماراتس بالاس في مدينة أبو ظبي عن ندمه على “محاولات زيادة عبئ الإنفاق” على شجرة عيد الميلاد المزينة بالألماس، الياقوت والأحجار النفيسة الأخرى، والحُلي “الأكثر دنيويةٍ” من ذهبٍ وفضةٍ والتي وفرها أحد صائغي الفندق.
The Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi has said it regrets “attempts to overload” a Christmas tree with diamonds, rubies, other precious stones, and “more mundane” gold and silver ornaments provided by a hotel jeweler.

The record-breaking “most expensive” tree, which stands at 13 meters tall and is valued at $11 million, was unveiled last week in order to “spread Christmas cheer,” but the opulent tree soon thereafter began gaining a negative reputation, causing hotel management to have second thoughts about it.

[VIDEO] From Brand Channel: Following criticism at the display of opulence, the hotel said in a statement picked up by AP that it regrets “attempts to overload the tradition followed by most hotels in the country with meanings and connotations that do not fall in line with the (hotel’s) professional standards.” It also blamed one of its commercial tenants, a jeweler, for creating and decorating the tree — stating, “The hotel is just a venue for exhibiting the tree.”

تعليق على ايلاف: بصراحة انا رأيي محايد .. لا اعتقد بأن هذه الشجرة الوحيدة التي بذرو واسرفو عليها الأموال فقط للأجانب.. معظم ما نراه في دولة الامارات هو للأجانب. لا اقصد بأن المواطن انهان او هناك تقصير.. انما هذه سياسة الدولة تريد جذب اكبر عدد من السياح وهناك تبذير واسراف في كثييير من الاشياء في دولتنا فهذ الفندق قصر الامارات كم من المبالغ دفعوا عليه ؟ وغير الفنادق الموجودة في دبي والمدن التي شيدت فقط للأجانب .. ولكن لله الحمد نحن نعيش في هذه الدولة معززيين مكرميين ولا ننذل ولا ننهان .. نعم ارى هناك تبذير في هذا الشيء والحمدلله يوم اعتذروا
Reader’s comment on Elaph: I’m sort of on the fence on this issue. This tree isn’t the first thing people have thrown ridiculous money at to attract foreigners. Actually, most of the stuff here in the Emirates is for foreigners. I’m not saying though that the Emiratis should feel like they’re being humiliated or shortchanged by this; the government is just trying to bring in the maximum number of tourists possible. There are lots of other things involving wasting money. How much did it cost to build the Palace Hotel in the first place? Or any of the other hotels in Dubai that were built just for the foreigners? But thank God we’re at least able to hold our heads high here. So yes, there is waste, but maybe someday they’ll recant.

تعليق على العربية: كثير بائخة الفكرة ..هاي دليل لفقر الامارات في جذب الانظار اليها بعد الازمة العالمية والان بعد ان اخذت دولة قطر انظار العالم عليها باتت ابو ظبي ودبي تصارع على البقاء في لائحة الاهتمام … وفضلا ان المجوهرات هي سلعة رقيقة ولا يجوزعلقها على الشجرة لكسب الانظار اليها ..اعتقد هناك خطأ فاضح في وضع الجوهرة في مكان لا تناسبها..صاحب الفكر افتقر جدا الى الذوق الرفيع وبهذا سبب ازعاجا لكل محبي الاحجار الكريمة والمعادن النفيسة
Reader’s comment on al-Arabiya: What a cockamamie idea. This only underlines how desperate Abu Dhabi and Dubai have become in the shadow of Qatar’s rise and the global financial crisis to remain on the radar. Not to mention that jewelry is delicate; it’s not meant to be put out like tawdry ornaments for people to gawk at. Whoever was behind this really lacks any taste and has only attracted the ire of precious stone and metal aficionados.

Al-Ittihad: I don’t understand why certain institutions in this country want to outdo other cultures at their own traditions – to prove themselves more Catholic than the pope as it were. As the Palace Hotel’s unveiling last week of a Christmas tree which, after being decked with lots of jewelry, became the most expensive in the world at a price tag of 40 million dirhams.

Most of the people that helped decorate this tree probably don’t even celebrate Christmas. They have many people traveling and staying at their hotel and wanted to be welcoming of another tradition. So yes it is excessive and I think the holiday season here can be very excessive, the truth “hurts”..”
