New US peace push as Mitchell returns to the Middle East

The Obama administration has decided to resume peace process in the Middle East through a new special envoy, George J. Mitchell, after nearly two years of frustration and failure.

The efforts are hoped to improve the tense atmosphere between Israel and Palestine and find a solution to the core issues that separate the two.

The Obama administration was able to convince Israel to freeze settlement building in the West Bank as a starter to direct talks. Mr. Mitchell will ask both sides to lay out their negotiating positions separately to the United States in order for the latter to seek ways to solutions.
